To reach Amankora Punakha, you cross a suspension bridge on foot. The lodge is on the far side, and there is no other way in. The moment of the bridge — the river below, the farmhouse appearing as the structure steadies under your feet — is one of the arrival experiences that guests describe for years afterward, not because it is dramatic but because it is exact: the lodge has been thinking about you since before you crossed.
The farmhouse is three hundred years old, and it was not rebuilt but restored — the stone walls, the dark timber beams, the agricultural proportions of a building designed for Bhutanese rural life. The twelve suites sit within this shell, warm-toned and precise, with freestanding bathtubs and windows that look out over orchards and the Mo Chhu river. The heated infinity pool is positioned to face the valley and the mountains beyond. At 1,250 metres, Punakha is the lowest point in the Amankora circuit — mild year-round, warmer in winter than anywhere else on the journey, the valley fertile enough to grow rice, oranges, and bananas.
This is the most intimate of the five Amankora lodges. Twelve rooms means that when the lodge is full, it is still quiet.
The crossing of the suspension bridge is the single best arrival moment of any property we use in Bhutan. I have placed many guests here and I have never had one fail to mention it — not as a gimmick, but as the moment the journey shifted into something else. The farmhouse soul is real rather than performed, and Punakha valley in winter, when the cranes are in Phobjikha to the east and the orchards are heavy, is one of the quietest and most beautiful things I can show a guest in this country.
