What you pay each night you are in Bhutan is a Guardian Contribution known as the Sustainable Development Fee, currently USD 100 per adult per night, with reduced rates for children and for guests travelling from India and Bangladesh. It is not a tax. It is the mechanism by which a small kingdom keeps tourism in scale with the place.
Every dollar goes directly to the work that makes a journey to Bhutan possible in the first place: free healthcare for every citizen, free education through university, the protected forests that keep our kingdom carbon-negative, and the rural infrastructure.
The Guardian Contribution is the quiet reason a journey through Bhutan feels uncrowded, deeply held, intact. By visiting, you are not a tourist. You are a co-guardian of our carbon-negative kingdom.
