COMO Uma Paro sits in the valley itself rather than on a ridge or above the treeline, and that position gives it a different quality from the hillside properties — wider sky, rice fields visible from the room, the sense that Bhutan’s agricultural life is part of the view rather than something seen from a distance.
The architecture follows Bhutanese tradition closely — whitewashed stone, dark timber lattice windows, sloped roofs — and the interiors move between the two COMO registers: Bhutanese craft in the materials, COMO’s characteristic precision in the linen and the light fittings. There are twenty-nine rooms and villas across the estate; the villas sit separately from the main building and have more space and more quiet around them.
The COMO Shambhala Retreat here specialises in the hot stone bath — river stones heated over a fire, tipped into a bath filled with mountain spring water — and treatments that draw on Tibetan and Ayurvedic traditions. The pool looks out over the valley. Yoga and guided meditation are available daily.
COMO Uma Paro works especially well for guests combining Paro with Punakha on a shorter trip — both UMAs are COMO properties, the sister lodge in Punakha is very small and very beautiful, and guests who stay at both find the continuity a pleasure. The valley position is also good for guests who want to be close to Paro without being in the forest: wider views, more light, and the farming landscape feeling immediately present.
