Naksel sits four hundred and fifty metres above the Paro valley floor, inside six acres of its own forest, at an elevation where the air is noticeably thinner and the light arrives at a slightly different angle. From the upper suites, the view takes in the full sweep of the valley, the monastery on the cliff to one side, the snows of Jomolhari to the north, and the farmland far below — a map of everything that makes Paro, Paro.
The rooftop executive suites have the highest views in the property; the junior suites have custom wood floors and rainfall showers; all thirty-eight rooms face outward rather than inward, orienting the guest toward the landscape rather than the building’s own courtyard. The MenChu Spa — “medicinal water” — runs hot stone baths with seasonal herbs and mountain spring water, and the solar-powered Swedish underfloor heating means the rooms are warm even at altitude in winter.
Thirty minutes from the airport by road, which means Naksel asks a little more commitment from the guest — the drive up from the valley is part of the arrival, and the removal from the town below is part of the experience.
The views at Naksel are categorically different from what you see at the valley-floor properties. Guests who stay here talk about that moment in the morning when they open the curtains — Jomolhari, the monastery on the cliff, the patchwork of farmland below — as one of the quiet highs of the trip.
