Six Senses Bumthang
Among blue pines beside the Chamkhar Chhu, in Bhutan's spiritual heartland.
The easternmost Six Senses lodge — beside a river in Bumthang, surrounded by blue pine forest and sacred sites.
Six Senses Bumthang sits at the furthest reach of the circuit, beside the Chamkhar Chhu river in the Jakar valley, surrounded by Bhutan’s famous blue pine forest. At 2,615 metres, the air is thin and clear, and the forest and river setting give the lodge a particularly meditative quality — quieter and more removed than the properties nearer the capital.
Bumthang is Bhutan’s spiritual heartland, and the lodge’s programming reflects this: cultural visits to the Jambay Lhakhang (7th century), the Kurje Lhakhang, and Tamshing Monastery are all within easy reach, and the Six Senses approach to wellness is deepened here by the sacred geography. The Alchemy Bar, spa, and holistic treatments continue as at every lodge in the circuit.
Guests who reach Bumthang are usually well into a longer journey and have found their pace. The lodge rewards that: the river sound at night, the pine canopy, and the ancient temples nearby are things that accumulate slowly.
Six Senses Bumthang is the right ending for a long Bhutan journey — by the time guests reach here they have usually settled into the country properly, and this lodge and valley give them somewhere worthy of that slower arrival. The river and the forest do something to the pace that the valley-floor properties in the west do not quite replicate.
