Whitewater Rafting
Two to four hours on the cold, silver Mo Chhu river in Punakha.
Whitewater rafting in Bhutan takes you down the Mo Chhu river in Punakha for two to four hours. The river runs cold in the dry months and turns silver in the afternoon light.
On the river
The rapids are real but not mean. You will be wet. On the still stretches, the paddling stops and it goes quiet. Your guide tells you when to paddle hard and when to rest. The river runs through the valley below Punakha, so you see farms, forest and hillsides from the water.
How long it takes
The trip lasts two to four hours, depending on the section of river and the water level.
When to go
October to April is the best time. The water is clear, the weather is dry, and the river is at a good level for rafting. In the dry months the water is cold, so we advise a warm layer for afterwards.
Who it suits
It suits active travellers, friends and families with older children who want to be on the water for a few hours. You do not need rafting experience. It fits well into a stay in Punakha, alongside a visit to Punakha Dzong.
