Six Senses Gangtey occupies a ridge above Phobjikha valley at 3,000 metres, with unobstructed views across the valley floor, the Gangtey Goemba monastery, and the crane nesting grounds below. The elevation here is the highest in the Six Senses Bhutan circuit, and the air and light have that particular quality of a high valley — sharp, clear, and very quiet.
The lodge architecture draws on the local vernacular — stone, timber, and the proportions of the traditional farmhouses in the valley below. The Six Senses spa and wellness programme continue here, and the setting gives the outdoor activities — walks, monastery visits, birdwatching — an immediacy that the lower-elevation lodges do not quite match.
From October to February, the black-necked cranes arrive from Tibet in the hundreds. The valley is a protected reserve, and the cranes move through the rice fields visible from the lodge.
Six Senses Gangtey is for guests on the circuit who want the most remote and elevated experience. The crane season is a genuine draw — the valley fills with the sound and movement of hundreds of birds — and outside crane season the silence and the altitude have their own quality. I include it on longer journeys where the guest wants to go further east.
