Taj Gangtey opened this year on the floor of the Phobjikha valley, close to the Black Necked Crane Information Centre and the trails that lead up to Gangtey Goemba. Every one of its thirty two rooms and three suites faces the valley, the meadow, the pine covered ridges, the monastery on the rise above. The building is new, and reads as a more contemporary counterpoint to the older stone and timber lodges already established in Phobjikha.
Vista, the main restaurant, and the Chang Bar & Lounge cover dining and drinks, and the J Wellness Circle Spa sits alongside an indoor heated pool, useful in a valley cold enough that Phobjikha holds its winter longer than Paro or Thimphu. Guided walks to the monastery and the crane centre are arranged through the hotel, along with curated nature trails.
Butler service and round the clock in-room dining are available, more structure than the older Phobjikha lodges tend to offer.
Taj Gangtey gives me another genuine option in a valley that used to have only one or two, useful when Gangtey Lodge or Amankora Gangtey are full, or when a guest wants the full-service structure, restaurant choice, spa, in-room dining, that a newer hotel provides. Every room facing the valley means nobody ends up looking at a car park in one of the most complete landscapes in Bhutan.
