Tshang Ri opened this year in Changangkha, the old quarter that gives its own temple, Changangkha Lhakhang, its name. The building is new and contemporary, thirty-two Deluxe Rooms and two larger Executive Suites, all facing the mountains rather than the street. The name itself translates loosely to Lord Brahma’s Abode, chosen by the owners for its sense of peace rather than for effect.
The restaurant, called the Noble Table, draws on the hotel’s own organic garden and on relationships with farming families around the valley, a detail that matters more in a capital city hotel than in a valley lodge, since so few properties in central Thimphu grow anything themselves. A rooftop lounge looks out over the town after dark, and a small tea house pours hand rolled teas brought down from the highland gardens of eastern Bhutan.
The spa keeps to the same restraint as the rest of the hotel, hot stone baths and steam treatments built from herbs and botanicals gathered locally rather than a standard international spa menu.
I like having somewhere new in Thimphu that is not trying to be Paro. Tshang Ri sits in Changangkha, an old residential quarter with its own temple a few minutes' walk away, which gives guests a version of the capital that feels lived in rather than arranged for visitors. The organic garden behind the Noble Table is a small thing, but it tells you something about how the hotel thinks about its own kitchen.
