At the temple where Guru Rinpoche subdued a demon, the east gathers to circle the sacred rock through day and night.
Gom Kora sits by the Drangme Chhu below Trashigang, a small gold roofed temple beside a massive black boulder that carries the body print of Guru Rinpoche. During the festival the circumambulation runs day and night, and tradition gives the night kora to the young — it has long been the east’s great courtship gathering, which the older generation acknowledges with a smile.
Brokpa herders walk in from Merak and Sakteng in full felt hatted dress, and the meadow fills with eastern Bhutan in its brightest weave. Few festivals anywhere feel less staged.
