At one of the kingdom's two oldest temples, the festival's great moment comes after dark — the mewang, a gate of burning grass the crowd passes beneath.
Jambay Lhakhang was built, tradition holds, in a single day in the seventh century, one of one hundred and eight temples raised to pin down a demoness across the Himalaya. Its Drup is Bumthang’s most atmospheric festival because its signature ritual happens at night: the mewang, an archway of blazing dry grass under which the crowd passes for blessing, sparks raining into the dark.
The naked dance, performed at midnight inside the temple grounds, is closed to cameras and largely to visitors — we brief guests honestly on what can and cannot be seen, and the festival loses nothing for it.
