Ura Yakchoe belongs to the village of Ura in a way few festivals still belong anywhere. The story runs that a lama left a sack containing a relic in an old woman’s house, and her descendants carry it in procession to this day. The dances are performed by villagers, the audience is the village itself, and the festival carries on whether or not anyone from outside arrives.
Ura is the highest and most self contained of Bumthang’s four valleys, all cobbles and shingle roofs, and staying nearby during Yakchoe is as close as a visitor comes to Bhutan before tourism.
