Bhutanese Cooking Experience
Three to four hours in a Bhutanese kitchen, where chillies are vegetables and butter goes on everything.
A Bhutanese cooking experience is three to four hours in a Bhutanese home kitchen, where chillies are vegetables and butter goes on everything.
What you do
You chop chillies, grind chillies, and learn that chillies are vegetables here. You cook alongside the host, who shows you how each dish is made. At the end you sit down and eat what you cooked together. You leave with the chilli paste recipe, and the smell of butter on your sleeves.
What you eat
The menu depends on the host and the season. Ema datshi, the national dish of chillies and cheese, is the dish most visitors want to learn. Rice usually comes with it. Ask us if you have a dish in mind.
Where
The experience is offered in Thimphu. We arrange the home and the host in advance.
When to go
It runs year round. Many guests choose it for a quiet afternoon between sightseeing days.
Who it suits
It suits food lovers, couples, families with children old enough to chop and stir, and anyone who wants to spend a few hours inside a Bhutanese home instead of a restaurant. Tell us about any dietary needs or spice limits when you book.
