A modern festival at 3,100 metres — cham danced against the full sweep of the eastern Himalaya, if the morning is clear.
The youngest festival in the calendar and the highest staged: Druk Wangyel Tshechu was created to honour the Fourth King and the armed forces, danced each 13 December at the Dochula pass among the hundred and eight memorial chortens. On a clear winter morning the backdrop is the entire northern range, Gangkhar Puensum included — no festival in Bhutan carries a bigger horizon.
Its dances were newly choreographed for this festival rather than inherited, which makes it a different kind of witness: tradition being made, not only kept.
