Rhododendron Festival
The botanical park in first bloom, celebrated quietly at Lamperi.
Two gentle days among the flowering slopes of Lamperi, where the kingdom's national parks show off their gaudiest season.
Not a tshechu but a garden party at altitude: the Royal Botanical Park at Lamperi, on the old road between Thimphu and Punakha, marks peak rhododendron season with walks, local food stalls and cultural programmes under the flowering canopy. Twenty nine of Bhutan’s forty six rhododendron species grow in this one park.
We fold it into April journeys as a slow day between valleys — an unhurried counterpoint to the dzongs, and the best introduction to why botanists lose their composure in this country.
