Bhutan in February: Winter Turning to Spring
February sits at the tail end of Bhutan’s winter, colder and quieter than the spring months that follow but already showing the first small signs of the turn. It is also, in many years, home to one of Bhutan’s most significant festivals.

The weather, plainly
Paro and Thimphu remain genuinely cold in February, with clear dry skies more often than not and occasional snow at higher elevations. Punakha and Wangdue continue to run noticeably milder, and by late February the very first hints of blossom can begin to appear in the lower valleys, well ahead of the fuller spring bloom of March and April.
Punakha’s tshechu and drubchen
The Punakha Drubchen and Punakha Tshechu, among Bhutan’s most significant festivals, often fall within February, though the exact dates follow the lunar calendar and shift year to year. Fewer guests, cold clear light
February remains a quiet month for travel, and the clear winter light across Punakha and Paro in particular can be strikingly good for photography, without the haze that builds later in the year. Dzongs and monasteries are genuinely uncrowded at this time.
Phobjikha, still in season
The black necked cranes remain in Phobjikha valley through February, making this one of the last reliable months to see them before they migrate back north in early spring.
