Bhutan in January: The Kingdom at Its Quietest

2 December 2025 2 min read

January is Bhutan at its most stripped back, cold, clear, and quieter than at any other point in the year. For a guest who wants the country without its busier season around them, this is often the honest answer.

January at a glance
Weather Cold, roughly 5 to 15°C by day, nights below freezing
Highlights The clearest skies of the year, the cranes at Phobjikha, near total quiet
Guest tip Lean on milder Punakha for part of your itinerary, and skip the higher treks this month

The weather, plainly

Paro and Thimphu are at their coldest in January, with dry air, clear skies, and the occasional light snowfall, particularly at higher elevations and mountain passes. Punakha and Wangdue, sitting at much lower altitude, remain considerably milder through the same weeks, and several January itineraries lean into this valley deliberately rather than fighting the cold in Paro and Thimphu throughout.

The quietest month

January sees fewer guests than almost any other month, which means genuinely uncrowded access to dzongs, monasteries, and trails that feel entirely different in April’s fuller calendar. For a guest whose priority is stillness over festival crowds, January delivers this more completely than any other month.

Phobjikha’s cranes

The black necked cranes remain in Phobjikha through January, and the valley in winter, largely empty of other guests, is one of the more genuinely quiet places in the entire itinerary.

What is closed to you, and what is not

Some higher altitude treks are not sensible in January’s cold and snow, and we will tell you plainly if a route you have in mind is not a good idea this time of year. Lower altitude cultural touring across Paro, Thimphu, Punakha, and Wangdue remains entirely open and, arguably, at its best.

How we build a January journey

A January journey trades trekking ambition for cultural depth and genuine stillness, more time in Punakha’s milder valley, unhurried dzong visits, and a version of the country almost nobody else is seeing at the same time. Ask us and we will build it around what January actually allows, rather than a route better suited to spring.
