Farmhouse Meal

A home cooked meal grown on the family's own land, in a farmhouse.

A family farmhouse depending on where your journey takes you. Welcome butter tea and khabzay wait when you arrive. The meal itself comes from their own fields, red rice, ema datshi, whatever vegetable is in season, with dried puffed rice and corn on the side. If the timing is right you can help with the cows before lunch, or just sit in the kitchen and watch. Nothing here is staged for visitors. It is simply how the family already eats.

A farmhouse meal is the simplest way to see how Bhutanese families actually eat. You spend two to three hours in a family home in Paro, Punakha or Phobjikha, sharing a meal grown on their own land.

What you will eat

Welcome butter tea and khabzay are waiting when you arrive. The meal comes from their own fields: red rice, ema datshi, and whatever vegetable is in season, with dried puffed rice and corn on the side. Dishes change with the season and with the household.

Before lunch

If the timing works, you can help with the cows, walk through the fields or sit in the kitchen and watch the meal come together.
