Bhutan in December: Winter in the Valleys
December is Bhutan at its coldest and clearest, the month the monsoon haze of summer is long gone and the air over the valleys turns crisp rather than simply cool. It is also a genuinely quiet month to travel, well outside the busier spring and autumn windows.

The weather, plainly
Paro and Thimphu turn properly cold in December, with occasional light snow at Thimphu’s elevation and more reliable snowfall at the surrounding passes and higher valleys. Punakha and Wangdue, sitting far lower, stay noticeably milder through the same weeks, which is why several journeys deliberately spend more time there in winter than a spring itinerary would.
National Day
Bhutan’s National Day falls on the 17th of December every year, marking the founding of the monarchy, and it is genuinely celebrated across the country rather than only in the capital. A guest travelling in mid December may see local celebrations they would not otherwise encounter on a standard itinerary.
Phobjikha, at its best
The black necked cranes that winter in Phobjikha valley are present from around November through February, and December sits comfortably inside that window. Seeing them arrive and settle into the valley floor is one of Bhutan’s more distinctive winter experiences, and one only available this time of year.
Fewer guests, genuine stillness
December is a quiet month by any measure, which suits Bhutan’s own positioning as a slow, deliberately uncrowded destination rather better than the fuller spring calendar does. Dzongs and monasteries that feel busy in April are genuinely still in December.
